Meet the Team

This charity would not have continued without the love and support from the Friends who have given their time and dedication.

KATE REPTON
Trustee - Founder

Almost 45 years ago, this remarkable lady founded this charity in memory of her daughter, Lucy. Kate set up the Friends of the Baby Unit to raise much-needed funds to ensure that vital equipment was available at Derby NICU. Over 4 decades and more than £2.5 million pounds raised, Kate has dedicated her life to supporting NICU because ‘tiny lives matter. Kate stepped down as Chairman at the end of 2019 but is still very much involved and at the heart of the charity.

ANDY BLURTON
TRustee - Chairman

Proudly appointed as Chairman in November 2019, I first made contact with the charity whilst fundraising in 2017 following our little boy being on the unit. After initially getting involved with helping with the charity's stalls, I was soon invited to join as a trustee.

I entered our first team of runners into the Derby 10k in 2018, now alongside the fellow trustees look to bring new ideas for fundraising and continue the great work to ensure the charity continues to be successful.

LISA WAINWRIGHT TRUSTEE Trustee - VICE CHAIR

I started working with FOBU in June 2015, after the birth of my premature daughter.

During our two week stay in NICU, I was amazed and inspired by the incredible work that happens on the unit. When leaving the unit with our daughter, both myself and my husband agreed that we wanted to give back somehow.

That’s when we met Kate, and began to volunteer. Fast forward five years and I had the honour of being voted vice chair for FOBU. It is an honour to be part of this incredible charity, wonderful team and be able to support Derby NICU.

PATRICK DYSON
Trustee - Treasurer

My name is Patrick Dyson and I am pleased to act as treasurer for the FOBU charity.

My duties include managing the day to day finances of the charity and compiling regular reports for the trustees to keep them updated on FOBU’s financial position throughout the year. I also prepare the year end FOBU accounts and the regulatory annual reports and returns that we are required to file with the Charities’ Commission.

ANGELA HARDING
 TRUSTEE - SECRETARY

My newborn son was rushed to NICU as a result of hypoglycemia and septicemia. As a result of the care and affection shown by the unit.

I am eternally grateful for the amazing work they do on NICU as without them my son wouldn't be here today. Friends of the Baby Unit do an amazing job of raising funds for NICU and decided I wanted to give something back following the care and support given to my son.

I have since taken on the role of Secretary and have been doing this for a number of years now and I love it.

JESS CUSHLEY
Trustee

Hi, I'm Jess. In 2017 my youngest child was born at 37 weeks and soon after birth, he developed breathing problems.

During our time in the NICU, we benefited from things that were provided by FOBU, things which helped us with our surprise stay on the unit. From our experience, I decided to get involved with FOBU to help future NICU babies and their families.

I am a Trustee who mostly helps with events - looking for new venues to hold a stall, helping to set up/pack away. I also work on the stall itself encouraging sales and generally promoting what FOBU is all about.

LAURA MASON
Trustee

I’m Laura and i became involved with Friends of the baby unit in 2017 when sadly my son passed away on the Neonatal Unit.

Being able to help others and raise money by being part of the charity team is something that I am very passionate about. In 2019 my daughter was born at 31 weeks and spent 6 weeks in the NiCU, which for me highlighted again the importance of the work that FOBU does and how amazing the team are.

Our most recent project of updating the bereavement room on the unit is something that I am really proud of.

Kara Blurton
Trustee

My name is Kara and I am the proudest mummy to Alfie who was in the baby unit in 2017 after a complicated birth and him falling very poorly.

I wanted to give something back after the amazing care and life saving treatment Alfie received and that is where I found FOBU and joined the group on Facebook.

After supporting various charity events and meeting some amazing people I became a trustee to the charity. Love every minute

KAREN SOULSBY
Trustee

I was invited to join FOBU as a trustee at the AGM in 2019 after supporting the charity since my second daughter was born extremely premature in September 2017. She spent 117 days in the care of the unit. During our time in NICU, we experienced first hand the incredible work of the unit and team.  It was at the unit where I met Kate Repton who supported me through my journey and now I am able to give back to those who might be experiencing something similar.

PAULINE SKIDMORE
Trustee

Our son Richard was born in Aug.1975. 6 weeks prem and spent 4 weeks on SCUB (as it was known). In July 1977 we were invited to a party at the hospital for prem babies to celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee which had been organised by Kate. We had our first coffee morning in October 1977 and since then have stood on dozens of stalls along with my husband Andrew. In recent years I have done the Teddy Tombola. I was Secretary for the Friends for over 30 years standing down in 2019.

RAJ TODD

The Friends of the Baby Unit is something quite special. We’ve had our own journey through the NICU unit and through that we realised we wanted to help others. Graduating as a NICU parent is quite possibly one of the hardest things ever but definitely the most rewarding. I help with all things relating to marketing and communications, and thoroughly enjoy it! We all love to shout about the amazing stories and fundraising events that ensure those special miracles have the best start in life.

Ashley Wainwright
Trustee

I am Ashley and I started to volunteer for FOBU in 2015 after the birth of our daughter Esme.

She spent 2 weeks on the Unit and when we left myself and Lisa both wanted to get involved with the charity and to give back.

I am proud to be a Trustee for such an amazing charity and look forward to being able to help parents and babies that have been on the unit.

WE’RE ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR NEW FRIENDS

If you think you’re the perfect fit for our charity, we’d love to hear from you. Whilst we don’t currently have any trustee vacancies, we’re greatful of any support and assistance from like minded people that share our vision. If you’d like to arrange a chat with our Chairman, please do get in touch.
